Fakir's Lawyer: 'I Believe Asphyxiation by Compression Emerged'

The legal representative for the family of Abderrahim Fakir, Fabio Anselmo, suggested that "asphyxiation due to compression" could be the cause of death, though he stressed that official conclusions are pending.

Benedetto Vergari, the forensic doctor involved in the autopsy, described the examination as "very complex" and "very detailed and thorough." He emphasized the need to await the results of further tests, including histological and toxicological analyses, and to verify the resuscitation procedures performed by medical personnel. The prosecutor has granted 90 days for the autopsy report.

The investigation into Fakir's death, which occurred on July 19, is proceeding under a manslaughter inquiry. The case involves two police officers and four Red Cross volunteers who were present at the scene. The Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, commented that videos suggest the police acted correctly, emphasizing the difficult split-second decisions officers must make. He also announced the upcoming deployment of five thousand body cameras.
