Falconets lose World Cup opener to Spain

Nigeria’s Falconets opened their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain in Group F in Poland.

Spain controlled much of the match at Arena Sosnowiec and took the lead in the 13th minute. Noemí Bejarano moved down the flank before sending a low ball into the box, where Marisa García finished the chance.

Nigeria struggled to create clear opportunities in the first half. Kafayat Mafisere recorded the team’s first attempt in the 37th minute, but her long-range shot went wide. After the interval, Nigeria introduced Precious Oscar and Victory Lucky and attacked with greater intent.

Spain remained dangerous, however, while goalkeeper Laia López kept out Nigeria’s efforts. Alba Cerrato doubled Spain’s lead in the 73rd minute after capitalising on a poor clearance and beating Christiana Uzoma.

The result leaves Nigeria without a point after the first round of Group F matches. China PR leads the group after defeating New Caledonia 5-0 earlier on Monday. Nigeria faces China on Thursday, with a positive result important to its hopes of reaching the knockout stage. The top two teams in each of the six groups and the four best third-placed sides will advance to the round of 16.
