US Open: Qinwen Zheng stuns Iga Swiatek after another 5-0 comeback

Qinwen Zheng turned another 5-0 deficit into a statement victory at the US Open, beating former champion Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals.

The Chinese player appeared close to elimination when Swiatek raced ahead on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Zheng then won seven of the next eight games to take the opening set. In the second, she broke Swiatek twice, sealing the match with a powerful backhand return winner.

The comeback repeated the drama of Zheng’s previous match, when she overturned a 5-0 deficit against Madison Keys in the deciding set. Her run in New York now stands at seven wins, including three qualifying victories, and she has reached the US Open quarter-finals for the third time.

The result continues Zheng’s recovery after elbow surgery in July 2025 and a difficult period that saw her ranking fall as low as 121. The victory will take the 23-year-old back to the brink of the world’s top 50. She will next meet either Naomi Osaka or Elena Rybakina.
