Falkland Islands delegation to visit Chile to advance commercial route with Punta Arenas

A delegation of businesspeople from the Falkland Islands is expected in Punta Arenas at the end of September, as Chile and the islands move closer to opening a regular maritime trade route. The central meeting will take place during the Punta Arenas Commercial Expo on Sept. 28 and 29, where Falkland Islands and British business representatives will meet companies from Chile’s Magallanes region.

The talks will focus on choosing suppliers, identifying cargo and settling the conditions for a connection between Punta Arenas and Puerto Argentino. The first official voyage is projected for November. Chilean shipping company Easter Island Naviera, which is also linked to Easter Island Logistics, has been placed in charge of the operation. The company already transports cargo between mainland Chile and Easter Island.

The agreement was promoted by the Falkland Islands Development Corporation, the islands’ economic development body. It also has the political backing of Punta Arenas Mayor Claudio Radonich, who has promoted the restoration of commercial ties with the archipelago. The proposed first shipment would carry food, fruit and vegetables, wine, construction materials, liquefied gas, spare parts and other Chilean products.

For Punta Arenas, the attraction is commercial. Much of the islands’ current maritime connection with South America passes through Montevideo, about 2,000 kilometers away. The Chilean alternative would cut that distance roughly in half and reduce logistics costs, its supporters say. Radonich has estimated that the Falkland Islands represent an annual purchasing market of about $20 million, some of which could be captured by companies in Magallanes.

The plan also touches one of Argentina’s most sensitive foreign-policy issues. It revives questions around Argentina’s 2010 Decree 256, which requires prior authorization for certain vessels traveling to or from the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Punta Arenas has maintained long-standing ties with the islands, including a weekly Latam flight stop and a sizable Chilean community there. A maritime route would deepen those links, while creating an uncomfortable signal for Argentina.
