Families of Nepal flood victims urge special communication channel

Families of Malaysians missing in the wake of devastating floods and landslides in Nepal are appealing to the government to establish a special communication channel. They emphasize the critical need for direct, consistent, and transparent updates regarding their loved ones who remain uncontactable.

Dr. R. Manivannan, representing the families, stated that 72 hours after the tragedy, families are still grappling with uncertainty and emotional distress. He stressed that every hour without reliable information intensifies their anxiety and suffering. While acknowledging the challenging circumstances for authorities, Manivannan asserted that timely and transparent communication is paramount during such crises.

According to the Malaysia-Singapore Family Interest Group (MASFIH), the missing Malaysians are part of three tourist groups. These groups comprise 23 Malaysians and three Singaporeans from Leaf Holiday, nine Malaysians from Dream Tibet Travel & Tours, and 17 Malaysians from Fishtail Tours & Travels. Their last known location was near the Rasuwagadhi border area between Nepal and Tibet.

MASFIH is calling for close operational cooperation between Nepal, China, and Malaysia to expand search efforts. Given the number of Malaysians whose whereabouts are still unknown, the group believes all available search and rescue resources should be mobilized. They also urge Wisma Putra, the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu, and the Malaysian Embassy in Beijing to provide daily official updates to the families.
