Famous American Musician to Perform in Warsaw for Free

Warsaw's Old Town will host a special jazz performance by acclaimed American musician Nicholas Payton as part of the "Jazz na Starówce" festival.

Payton, a celebrated trumpeter and pianist, is a two-time Grammy Award winner with five nominations. He is known for blending deep jazz traditions with innovation. He will perform with a trio featuring guitarist Charlie Hunter and drummer Jeff Ballard. This event marks another musical feast for the audience following a performance by Brazilian pianist and vocalist Eliane Elias.

"Nicholas Payton, a two-time winner of two Grammy awards and five nominations, is undoubtedly one of the world's leading jazz trumpeters. Nicholas Payton combines deep jazz tradition with innovation," said Iwona Strzelczyk-Wojciechowska, co-organizer of the festival. She noted that audiences in Poland have previously experienced Payton's unique style.

Payton, who hails from a musical family in New Orleans, has a rich career. He graduated from the High School for the Creative Arts, where he studied under jazz masters like Ellis Marsalis. His debut album, "From This Moment," was released in 1994. He also contributed to the soundtrack for Robert Altman's film "Kansas City," which was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes. His Grammy for Best Instrumental Solo came in 1997 for the album "Doc Cheatham & Nicholas Payton."

Throughout his career, Payton has collaborated with numerous jazz legends, including Ray Brown, Ray Charles, Art Blakey, and Herbie Hancock, as well as vocalists like Cassandra Wilson and Esperanza Spalding. He champions the concept of BAM – Black American Music – aiming to redefine jazz within the context of African American cultural heritage. The "Jazz na Starówce" festival, now in its 32nd year, continues its tradition of bringing world-class jazz to Warsaw.
