Farewell to Şükran Abla

For exactly 60 years, Şükran Soner practiced journalism under Cumhuriyet’s roof and helped illuminate the way for her colleagues. Twice a week, she wrote in support of labor, workers’ rights, human rights, peace, democracy and justice.

She prepared striking investigative files and published books, but her work extended beyond writing. She fought for Turkey to become a fairer, more equal and freer country. She brought the voices of workers and people who had suffered injustice to the newspaper’s pages.

Şükran Soner is no longer with Cumhuriyet. The newspaper says, however, that the values she defended, the journalistic legacy she left and her determination to struggle will live on in its pages. As long as Cumhuriyet continues, it says, the fight for labor, peace, democracy and justice will continue in its columns.
