Farmers Report Pest Numbers Outpacing Control Efforts in New Zealand Survey

New Zealand farmers are finding it increasingly difficult to manage rising pest animal populations on their farms, despite escalating their spending on control measures each year. A recent biennial national survey conducted by industry group Federated Farmers, which polled 660 of its members, reveals that pest numbers are outpacing current control efforts.

The survey highlights that farmers are struggling to gain the upper hand against common pests. Among the most problematic, brushtail possums have been ranked as one of the worst pests nationwide by the surveyed farmers. This indicates a significant challenge in managing these invasive species effectively across the country.

The findings suggest a persistent and growing problem for the agricultural sector, impacting farm productivity and potentially the environment. The increased investment in pest control has not yielded the desired results, pointing to the need for potentially new or enhanced strategies to combat these animals.
