Faster Brooklyn Buses: Mamdani Reforms Boulevard for Public Transit

In a significant move to reclaim a dangerous stretch of Brooklyn roadway, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, in collaboration with the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), has launched a comprehensive reform plan for Linden Boulevard. This initiative targets the segment between Fountain Avenue and Conduit Boulevard, an area notorious for its hazards and often referred to as the 'new boulevard of death.'

Official figures paint a grim picture: between 2021 and 2025, this particular section of Linden Boulevard recorded 443 injuries, 15 of which were severe, alongside one tragic fatality. The data underscores the urgent need for intervention, as an average of one person is injured every four days. This alarming rate has rightly designated the boulevard as a priority corridor, signaling its significantly higher-than-average risk for fatalities and serious injuries.

The proposed redesign, presented to the local community board, involves a substantial overhaul of approximately one mile of the roadway. The centerpiece of the plan is the implementation of dedicated bus lanes, operational around the clock and exclusively for public transit, effectively barring private vehicles. This measure is crucial for alleviating the current gridlock, where buses often crawl at a mere 4 miles per hour, trapped behind double-parked cars.

Beyond the dedicated bus lanes, the project includes vital upgrades to pedestrian facilities. Eight new concrete islands will be installed, serving as both passenger boarding areas and pedestrian refuges, significantly reducing the distance required to cross the wide 140-foot boulevard. Furthermore, new signalized crosswalks at Pine and Emerald Streets will enhance connectivity between neighborhoods and provide much-needed safe crossing points. This project is particularly vital for the local community, where 54% of residents rely on public transport and 57% of households lack private vehicles, making efficient bus service essential for daily life.
