Fauci Invokes Fifth Amendment at Senate Hearing on COVID-19 Origins

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, invoked his constitutional right to remain silent during a U.S. Senate hearing investigating the origins of COVID-19. Fauci cited his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination when questioned about his private affairs, particularly in light of Republican senators releasing over 1,000 pages of his early pandemic notes.

The primary focus of the investigation is whether SARS-CoV-2 emerged naturally or leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan, China. A key point of contention is whether U.S. funding supported risky research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Senator Rand Paul released Fauci's notes, alleging they show his concern about a lab origin, which he claims contradicts his public stance favoring a natural origin.

Fauci and many supporting scientists have maintained that he remained open to various scientific hypotheses and that available data pointed to natural zoonotic transmission. Fauci himself has stated publicly that he was open to both theories but believed more evidence supported a natural origin, similar to other coronaviruses like SARS and MERS. Critics, however, argue that U.S. grants channeled through the EcoHealth Alliance to the Wuhan Institute of Virology facilitated dangerous virus "enhancements."

Fauci testified that the research in question was not gain-of-function and that it was "molecularly impossible" to link the viruses studied at the institute to the pandemic strain. A Republican-led subcommittee in 2024 found no evidence linking Fauci to irregularities. Fauci's refusal to answer questions escalates the long-standing tension between him and Republican lawmakers over his pandemic response and accusations of lying about COVID-19's origins, which he denies.
