Skopje Clinic Director: Critical Condition for 76-Year-Old with West Nile Fever

A 76-year-old resident of Skopje is in critical condition due to West Nile fever, experiencing severe brain inflammation and requiring respiratory support. The patient is currently in the intensive care unit at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases in Skopje.

Clinic director Fadil Cana stated that four other patients with confirmed West Nile fever are being treated in the neuro-infection department, with their conditions described as stable. Additionally, three patients with the virus affecting their central nervous system are receiving home treatment, awaiting further test results from the Institute of Public Health.

All affected individuals are over 60 years old and have contracted the neuroinvasive form of the virus. While some patients contracted the infection while in Greece, others were infected within North Macedonia. Cana stressed that the virus is transmitted solely through the bite of an infected mosquito and not from person to person.
