FC Thun Reaches European League Phase Despite Loss; Other Swiss Clubs Advance

FC Thun has successfully secured a place in a European league phase, achieving a key season objective despite a challenging 3-2 away defeat against Vikingur in Reykjavik. The Swiss team's comfortable 3-0 advantage from the first leg proved decisive, propelling them into the Europa League playoffs.

The match itself was a back-and-forth affair. Thun initially took the lead in the 10th minute through Fabio Fehr after an Icelandic defensive error. However, Vikingur, spurred on by their home crowd, quickly equalized via a spectacular long-range strike from Gylfi Sigurdsson. Brighton Labeau restored Thun's lead before halftime, only for Stigur Thordarson to level the score once more, resulting in a 2-2 draw at the break.

In the second half, Vikingur pressed their advantage and took a 3-2 lead in the 55th minute through Valdimar Ingimundarson. The Icelandic side pushed for more goals, but a strong performance from Thun's goalkeeper, Niklas Steffen, who made a crucial save late in the game, prevented further damage and secured their progression.

Meanwhile, three other Swiss clubs, Lugano, St. Gallen, and Sion, have also advanced to the final qualifying round for the Conference League, keeping their hopes of European competition alive into the autumn.
