FDA Study Finds Live Bacteria in One-Third of Tattoo Inks

A comprehensive analysis by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) researchers has revealed alarming levels of bacterial contamination in tattoo and permanent makeup inks. The study, which combined findings from four separate investigations between 2018 and 2024, challenges the perceived safety and sterilization standards within the industry.

Researchers examined 259 unopened bottles of tattoo and permanent makeup ink collected from the market. Laboratory tests showed that a significant 35.4% of these products contained live bacterial colonies. This finding is particularly concerning as it indicates contamination even in products that have not yet been opened or used.

The investigation also found that the "sterile" labels on some ink packaging were unreliable. While 30.5% of inks labeled as sterile still harbored bacteria, the rate was slightly higher at 35.5% for those without such claims. Notably, no significant difference in contamination levels was observed between domestic and imported products, suggesting a widespread issue.

Further genetic analysis identified 94 distinct bacterial species within the inks. Alarmingly, one-third of these identified microbes are capable of causing serious infections in humans. Experts emphasize that while bacteria may not cause immediate infection with every use, the risk is substantial given that tattooing and permanent makeup involve breaking the skin's integrity. They are urgently calling for a review of sterilization standards throughout the production and distribution chain.
