Fear returned to the Campi Flegrei area near Naples on a sweltering afternoon when a magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck, prompting residents to flee their homes. The tremor, felt strongly in nearby Naples districts, was the most powerful in the region in four decades, surpassing a 4.6 magnitude quake recorded in June 2025. The main shock was followed by a seismic swarm, with at least thirty aftershocks of varying intensity, including a magnitude 3.8 tremor later that evening.

Authorities reported 21 injuries, with two individuals in serious condition. In Pozzuoli, the most affected area, a section of a building wall collapsed on Via Pergolesi, sending large tuff stones crashing onto parked cars. Several building facades in Pozzuoli showed cracks, and debris covered the streets. Many residents decided to spend the night outdoors, fearing to return to their homes.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is reportedly following the developments and the crisis unit meetings. The crisis unit, chaired by Fabio Ciciliano, head of the Civil Protection Department, has set up 185 beds in an emergency reception center in Pozzuoli. Despite the damage and the fear, no fatalities have been reported. The seismic activity in Campi Flegrei, known for its bradyseism (ground uplift and subsidence), has intensified recently, causing concern among the local population.

The tremor appeared strong right away and, as always, was also felt in the Naples districts closest to the Phlegraean coast. Eight injured so far, none seriously.

The Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, spoke with the mayors of Pozzuoli and Bacoli following the earthquake and convened the coordination center for rescue operations. While the focus is on assessing structural damage and ensuring public safety, the event has rekindled anxieties about the volcanic area's potential for further seismic activity. The ongoing swarm of tremors continues, with the latest recorded tremor at magnitude 1.6 shortly after midnight.
