Federal Government begins evacuation of roadside trucks on Enugu-Onitsha Expressway

Nigeria's Federal Government has initiated an operation to clear heavy-duty trucks parked illegally along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. The move, coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Works, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance road safety.

The enforcement drive, which started at the Anambra boundary and extended through the 9th Mile axis to the Enugu metropolis, involves collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps, Enugu State Transport Management Authority, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigerian Army. Smart Okpi, the Federal Controller of Works in Enugu State, stated the operation follows the Minister of Works' directive to remove obstructions.

So far, people have been complying. You can see that the trucks are already leaving the expressway, making it clear and safer for road users.

Okpi noted that prior notifications were issued to stakeholders. He reported high compliance, with trucks already vacating the expressway. The ministry plans to sustain the monitoring of the corridor to prevent recurrence. Community leaders and business associations participated, with leaders like Mohamed Idris of the Gariki Ugwuoba Cattle Market describing the exercise as timely. Idris mentioned efforts to sensitize drivers and the use of an overstretched private facility for parking, appealing for more government-provided spaces.
