Federal Police Investigate Governor Brandão as Alleged Criminal Organization Leader

A series of Federal Police inquiries, currently under the purview of Supreme Court Justice Flávio Dino, are investigating the sitting governor of Maranhão, Carlos Brandão. The investigations center on suspicions that Brandão leads a criminal organization involved in the misappropriation of public funds and potentially a homicide.

Adding another layer to the legal scrutiny, the Federal Police are also looking into allegations that Senator Weverton Rocha exerted pressure on Superior Court of Justice Minister Humberto Martins. This alleged pressure aimed to halt an investigation into a murder. Governor Brandão has publicly stated that he believes he is a victim of political persecution orchestrated by Minister Dino.

Justice Dino recently lifted the secrecy on three decisions related to these investigations, offering a clearer view of the evidence against Brandão. This move came amid public criticism directed at Dino, particularly following an operation ordered by a colleague, Alexandre de Moraes, to uncover the source of a journalist who published reports about official vehicles used by Dino and his family in Maranhão. The journalist's informant was identified as Raimundo Cutrim, a former secretary under Brandão, accused of crimes including stalking Dino and improperly accessing information systems, posing a security risk.
