Fedorov crisis: How minister’s dismissal turned into scandal

A significant military and political crisis gripped Ukraine in mid-July 2026, triggered by the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. The fallout was substantial, leading to the resignation of General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander overseeing military operations and a close associate of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. General Mykhailo Drapatyi, Syrskyi's longtime rival, assumed command of military operations.

The crisis exposed deeper institutional problems within Ukraine's defense apparatus, primarily between the General Staff, responsible for military operations and mobilization, and the Ministry of Defense, which handles resources, weapons, and funding. However, his efforts to reform established, opaque systems for fund and contract distribution met significant resistance.

By July, the conflict between Fedorov and Syrskyi had intensified, centering on fundamental approaches to warfare. Fedorov advocated for rapid technological modernization and stringent spending controls, contrasting with Syrskyi's preference for a traditional, centralized military structure. President Zelenskyy ultimately sided with Syrskyi, dismissing Fedorov to maintain leadership unity, a decision that sparked considerable public protest and was seen by many as a sign of institutional chaos and a regression to older practices.
