Fedorov rejects Zelenskyy's offer, insists on Defense Minister post

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has rejected President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's proposal to serve as deputy prime minister for military innovation. Fedorov stated he would only accept a return to a government position if reappointed as Defense Minister, emphasizing that only this role grants the necessary authority.

Fedorov articulated that the Defense Minister position is crucial for combating corruption in procurement, fully transforming the army, executing asymmetric operations against the enemy, eradicating a culture of lies and irresponsibility within the system, and completing ongoing initiatives. He believes no other post holds the real authority to achieve these objectives.

It is for this reason that I will not accept any other position than Minister of Defense.

Zelenskyy had dismissed Fedorov as Defense Minister the previous week. This decision triggered street protests and significant criticism, ultimately leading to the dismissal of then-Army Chief of Staff Oleksandr Syrskyi. Fedorov had previously cited conflicts with Syrskyi, accusing him of obstructing modernization efforts and resisting the increased use of drones.

Supporters of Fedorov had demanded Syrskyi's immediate dismissal during their protests, which was followed by the appointment of General Mykhailo Drapatyi, considered an ally of Fedorov, as the new head of the Army. Despite this change, Fedorov's stance remains firm, with his supporters planning daily demonstrations to demand his return as Defense Minister.
