Feeling lonely in Seoul? Try a convenience store for the mind

Seoul is addressing loneliness among its residents, particularly foreign nationals, by establishing 19 community spaces known as Seoul Maeum Convenience Stores. These facilities, which are not retail outlets but informal support centers, offer a place for individuals experiencing social isolation to connect with others and seek emotional well-being.

The initiative, launched in March 2025, provides visitors with opportunities for self-assessment on loneliness, conversations with staff or individuals who have faced social isolation, and referrals to professional counseling, welfare services, or other relevant programs. The centers aim to foster social connection and provide accessible support.

Beyond emotional support, these centers also offer amenities like instant noodles and health equipment, alongside branch-specific community programs designed to encourage interaction among residents. The project is open to all Seoul residents grappling with loneliness, emphasizing inclusivity for both foreign and local populations.

The 19 locations are situated within 17 community welfare centers and two support centers for single-person households across 13 districts in Seoul. Operating hours vary, with some branches open on Saturdays, and visitors are advised to confirm program availability, hours, and foreign-language assistance in advance.
