Felipe Calderón not linked to García Luna money laundering, says Sheinbaum; doesn't rule out knowledge

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that former President Felipe Calderón has not been formally implicated in the ongoing investigations into money laundering and illicit resource diversion linked to his former Secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Luna. The Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) has been examining these activities.

When questioned about whether any of Calderón's family members or former cabinet members might be connected to García Luna's alleged illicit dealings, Sheinbaum stated that no such links have emerged thus far. However, she cautioned that this does not definitively clear Calderón himself.

"So he is not, let's say, listed as a recipient of funds, that doesn't mean that he might not have known about his criminal activities when he was President, but they haven't come out in the money laundering scheme," Sheinbaum explained. This suggests that while direct involvement in financial crimes has not been established for Calderón, the possibility of his awareness of García Luna's actions remains an open question.

The UIF has reportedly detailed a scheme involving the diversion of resources connected to García Luna, further complicating the investigation. The legal proceedings against García Luna, who served as Mexico's top security official under Calderón, are a significant focus for the current administration's efforts to address corruption.
