Ferry capsizes off Guyana coast; 67 rescued, dozens missing

A ferry carrying around 120 people capsized off the coast of Guyana, prompting an ongoing search and rescue operation. Authorities reported that 67 individuals, including 15 children, have been rescued so far. The vessel, MV Barima, was traveling from the capital, Georgetown, along the Atlantic coast to Port Kaituma when it overturned near the Pomeroon River.

Minister-President Mark Phillips stated that rescue efforts will continue until all possibilities are exhausted. Both government agencies and private vessels are involved in the operation. Reports indicate the ferry was equipped with 250 life vests, two rigid life rafts, and six inflatable rafts.

Emergency centers have been set up to provide information and support to the families of those affected. The incident occurred after an emergency call was received from the MV Barima at 11:01 PM on Saturday. The cause of the capsizing remains under investigation.
