Festival transforms Cluj from Tricolor City to Film Capital: 'TIFF was the chance for a generation of Romanian filmmakers'

Cluj, Romania – What began as a modest film festival in 2002, with just 9,000 attendees and a handful of enthusiasts, has blossomed into the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF), a significant international cinema event drawing over 100,000 visitors.

TIFF's journey mirrors the narrative arc of an independent film that unexpectedly becomes a blockbuster. In its early days, Cluj was a city in transition, its cinemas showing their age and stray dogs roaming the streets. The first festival featured 43 films from 15 countries and a surprise guest, Jason Priestley, embodying the spirit of a production made on a shoestring budget.

Now, 25 editions later, TIFF stands as a testament to sustained vision and growth. It has evolved from a project on the fringes of European cultural circuits into a recognized international landmark. The festival has hosted cinematic legends such as Catherine Deneuve, Sophia Loren, Alain Delon, Geoffrey Rush, Nicolas Cage, Claudia Cardinale, and Oliver Stone.
