FG completes 40 roads, pushes 5,400km under construction

Nigeria's Federal Government has made significant strides in road infrastructure development, completing around 1,800 kilometers of major projects and actively working on another 5,400 kilometers between May 2023 and May 2026. The Federal Ministry of Works' three-year report highlights the completion of 40 major road and bridge projects across the country's six geopolitical zones, with 133 projects still underway.

The report, analyzed by The Punch, indicates a strategic deployment of road infrastructure projects under President Bola Tinubu's administration. The South-West zone leads in completed projects with 12, followed by the South-East, North-East, and South-South with six each. The North-West and North-Central zones each have five completed projects. These initiatives encompass reconstruction, dualization, construction of new corridors, bridges, bypasses, and coastal highways.

This intensive road construction program is concentrated along vital economic and strategic routes, including the Lagos-Ibadan, Lagos-Calabar, Sokoto-Badagry, Kano-Maiduguri, and Lokoja-Benin corridors. These routes connect major cities, ports, agricultural hubs, and international borders, aiming to improve connectivity and facilitate the movement of goods and people.

The development directly addresses years of public outcry over the dilapidated state of federal roads, which have contributed to extended travel times, increased vehicle operating costs, and hindered the transportation of agricultural produce and manufactured goods. The Federal Ministry of Works' records show a particularly strong focus on the South-West, with approximately 600 kilometers of roads completed and over 1,000 kilometers under construction or reconstruction in the zone.
