FG inaugurates democracy day committee, hails MKO Abiola’s sacrifice

Nigeria's Federal Government has established an Inter-Ministerial Committee to orchestrate the nation's 27th Democracy Day festivities, a move that also serves as a tribute to the sacrifices made by figures such as the late Chief Moshood Abiola and other champions of the June 12 struggle.

The democratic values and institutions being strengthened across the country today are founded on the sacrifices and struggles of patriots and democrats who fought for the enthronement of democratic rule in Nigeria.

Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), emphasized that Democracy Day is a crucial occasion for national reflection on the arduous journey toward democratic rule. He highlighted that the strengthened democratic values and institutions across Nigeria today are built upon the struggles and commitments of patriots who fought for democratic governance.

Akume specifically lauded the heroes of the June 12, 1993, struggle and MKO Abiola, whose unwavering dedication to democracy led to the official recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day. Commemorating this day, he stated, is a fitting tribute to their memory and a celebration of Nigeria's democratic progress.

The SGF also indicated that the anniversary would provide a platform for the Federal Government to highlight its accomplishments and reiterate its dedication to democratic principles, institutional development, and national progress. President Bola Tinubu's administration intends to use the occasion to demonstrate advancements in consolidating democracy, reinforcing institutions, and implementing reforms, despite current socio-economic challenges. The celebration is planned to be "modest but purposeful," aligning with the government's fiscal responsibility commitments.
