FG launches $1.07 billion programmes to strengthen PHCs, education, governance

Nigeria's federal government has initiated a significant investment of over $1.07 billion in new development programs aimed at bolstering primary healthcare, improving governance, and enhancing education. These initiatives are a core component of the nation's economic recovery agenda, designed to translate recent economic reforms into tangible improvements in the quality of life for Nigerians.

The launch includes several key programs, notably the Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity Governance (HOPE GOV) program, backed by $500 million, and the Primary Healthcare Provision Strengthening Program (HOPE PHC), financed with $570 million. These are integrated within the broader HOPE program, which also encompasses education, and are complemented by the Solutions for Internally Displaced Persons and Host Communities (SOLID) program.

The initiatives were designed to ensure that the gains from the country’s economic reforms translate into improved living standards for Nigerians.

President Bola Tinubu, represented at the launch by the Minister of Finance, emphasized that these programs are strategically designed to strengthen human capital development and improve public service delivery. He highlighted existing progress, such as improvements in GDP growth and foreign reserves, and noted that approximately 15 million vulnerable households have benefited from an expanded social transfer program. The HOPE GOV program specifically targets enhanced budget planning and the recruitment of essential personnel in underserved areas, while HOPE PHC aims to improve service delivery at the primary care level.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, detailed the health sector's progress under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII). This includes revitalizing 3,026 primary healthcare centers, supplying equipment to secondary hospitals, and improving emergency transport services for maternal and newborn care. These efforts have reportedly led to increased healthcare service utilization, with more women choosing to deliver in health facilities.
