FG reiterates commitment to water security, sanitation advancement

Nigeria proudly hosts the crucial Western African Sub-Regional Ministerial and Technical Advisory Committee consultation on the Africa Water Vision 2063, demonstrating its commitment to continental development goals. This three-day event in Abuja brings together key figures – ministers, technical experts, development partners, and regional stakeholders – to collaboratively shape the future of water governance and service delivery across West Africa.

Convened by the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) in partnership with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, the consultation is a vital platform for developing coordinated responses to the escalating pressures on Africa's water resources. As Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Utsev, declared, Nigeria is privileged to lead these discussions, not only as the host of the AMCOW Secretariat but as a steadfast partner in advancing Africa's collective water and sanitation agenda. The focus is squarely on establishing priorities for the 2026–2033 implementation framework.

The Africa Water Vision 2063 provides a transformative framework for achieving sustainable development and inclusive growth in line with Agenda 2063.

Utsev underscored the critical importance of water security, linking it directly to economic growth, public health, and climate resilience. He acknowledged the increasing strain on Africa's water systems due to rapid urbanization, population growth, and climate variability, emphasizing that coordinated regional action is now paramount. The consultation is expected to yield measurable targets, strengthen financing mechanisms, and identify key investment areas to accelerate access to safe drinking water and sanitation services, reinforcing Nigeria's role in driving sustainable development across the continent.
