FG secures release of six Nigerians detained in Côte d’Ivoire

Six Nigerian citizens detained in Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025 have regained their freedom, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Friday. The detainees were held on allegations of economic crimes.

The Ministry commends the Ambassador of Nigeria to Côte d’Ivoire, His Excellency Ambassador Nwabiola C. Ezenwa, and the entire staff of the Embassy for their steadfast commitment, professionalism and tireless diplomatic efforts which culminated in the successful resolution of the matter.

Four of the Nigerians were released on Monday, June 22, and the remaining two on Tuesday, June 23. Their release followed persistent diplomatic and consular efforts by the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan, working with Ivorian authorities. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs commended the Nigerian Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Nwabiola Ezenwa, and embassy staff for their professionalism and commitment.

The embassy maintained regular consular access to the detained individuals, ensuring their welfare throughout their incarceration. They also engaged consistently with the Ivorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Justice to facilitate the release. The Nigerian government thanked the Government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation, noting the cordial bilateral relationship contributed to the successful resolution.

The Embassy maintained regular consular access to the detained Nigerians, ensured their welfare throughout their detention, and engaged consistently with the Ivorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, and other relevant institutions to secure their release.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the Federal Government's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Nigerian citizens abroad. It assured Nigerians overseas that their protection remains a top priority of Nigeria’s foreign policy. The ministry also advised citizens living or traveling abroad to adhere to the laws of their host countries and to contact the nearest Nigerian diplomatic mission when necessary.
