FG to construct new dam in Plateau

The Nigerian Federal Government has announced plans to build a new dam in Limpye, Ampang East District of Kanke Local Government Area, Plateau State. The project aims to enhance water supply, irrigation, and power generation in the North-Central region.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr Joseph Utsev, revealed the plan during an assessment visit to the proposed dam site. The visit, directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was to evaluate dams nationwide for rehabilitation and development. Utsev assured that the Mangu Dam in Pankshin Local Government Area, currently 90% complete, will soon be commissioned.

The Limpye Dam project will commence following feasibility studies, detailed designs, and approval from the Federal Executive Council. The dam is expected to provide clean water to local communities, boost irrigation farming, create jobs for women and youths, and increase hydropower generation for the national grid. Similar projects along the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway corridor aim to supply domestic water, reduce farmer-herder conflicts, and improve electricity generation.

Rehabilitation works are also underway at the Alau Dam in Borno State, with several other dams across the country nearing completion. The Minister commended President Tinubu's support for the water and sanitation sector, urging Plateau State residents to appreciate the administration's development efforts.
