FG to tackle substandard goods with stronger measurement systems

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, has reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing the quality of Nigerian products and fostering industrial advancement. At the 2026 World Metrology Day celebration, Minister Jumoke Oduwole underscored the pivotal role of standardization and accurate measurement systems in driving economic development, boosting industrial productivity, and building consumer confidence. This commitment signals a proactive approach to addressing the persistent challenge of substandard goods that undermine the competitiveness of Nigerian products both domestically and internationally.

Standardisation and metrology are powerful tools for improving productivity, reducing waste and enhancing the competitiveness of Nigerian products.

The government's strategy involves a multi-pronged approach, including the implementation of stricter regulations, the upgrading of testing facilities, and the digitalization of operational processes. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) is central to these efforts, with expanded operations and improved infrastructure aimed at ensuring that Nigerian products meet global standards. The establishment of additional offices and enhanced testing capabilities are designed to bolster the enforcement mechanisms necessary to curb the influx and production of inferior goods.

They ensure transparency, accountability, and evidence-based policymaking, fostering public trust in institutions. From healthcare to manufacturing and trade, accurate measurements are indispensable for safety, quality, and economic progress. The collaboration between public and private sectors is crucial for promoting these standards and safeguarding consumer interests, ultimately supporting Nigeria's economic growth trajectory.
