FG unveils 100 electric buses for civil servants

The Federal Government has commissioned 100 electric buses as part of the Renewed Hope Mass Transit Programme, aiming to alleviate transportation challenges faced by federal civil servants and boost their welfare. The launch ceremony took place at Eagle Square in Abuja.

For many Civil Servants, the daily commute shapes their finances, their safety, their punctuality, and ultimately their productivity.

Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, the outgoing Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, described the initiative as a significant milestone and her "parting gift" to civil servants. She highlighted that affordable and reliable transportation directly impacts workers' finances, safety, punctuality, and productivity. The new buses are expected to help civil servants save money, reduce commuting risks, and arrive at work with more energy.

The first phase of the program includes 37 of the 100 approved buses. Operations will commence with a pilot phase on selected routes before a full rollout. The buses are also slated for deployment to Federal Secretariats across various states. A Special Purpose Vehicle has been established to manage, maintain, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the fleet.

What we have here is 37 buses, being the first instalment of the 100 Electric Buses.

Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, viewed the project as a multifaceted intervention combining worker welfare, productivity, industrialization, and technology. Each electric bus has a capacity of up to 200 passengers and can travel at least 200 kilometers on a full charge. The Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council stated that the full complement of 100 buses is anticipated by December 2026.

A Special Purpose Vehicle has been established to ensure their proper management, maintenance and long-term sustainability.

Enoh commended the National Automotive Design and Development Council and other stakeholders, encouraging local manufacturers to invest in production facilities and enhance local content to produce globally competitive products. He reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring its economic reforms translate into tangible benefits like industries, jobs, infrastructure, and improved living standards.

Each of the 100 electric buses could accommodate up to 200 passengers and travel a minimum of 200 kilometres on a full charge.
