FG, Yakubu Gowon varsity collaborate on diplomatic training

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja are joining forces to enhance Nigeria's foreign service. This collaboration will focus on diplomatic training, policy research, and capacity building.

The partnership aims to align the country's foreign policy with national development priorities. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb Sola Enikanolaiye, emphasized that foreign policy must be people-centered and deliver tangible outcomes in prosperity, job creation, and security. He highlighted democracy and security as tools for improving citizens' living standards.

Foreign policy must be centred on the Nigerian people and must deliver tangible outcomes in prosperity, job creation, security and overall well-being.

Key initiatives include joint mid-career training programs, revitalizing the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy, and policy research for evidence-based decision-making. The collaboration will also promote managed migration and establish ECOWAS clubs in tertiary institutions to deepen students' understanding of the regional bloc. The ministry will facilitate regular engagements between university representatives and resident ambassadors and high commissioners.

Yakubu Gowon University, with over 40,000 students, is positioned to support these objectives. The university's Directorate of Foreign Studies and Foreign Languages and the Centre for Migration and Security Studies will serve as key platforms for cooperation, including staff and student exchanges.
