Kogi East APC seeks governorship slot 10 years after Audu’s death

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress in Nigeria's Kogi East Senatorial District are renewing calls for the state's governorship to return to their region. This demand comes a decade after the death of former Governor Prince Abubakar Audu and aims to reposition the district politically.

The call was a central theme in a communiqué issued after a strategic leadership conference in Abuja. Party leaders declared that Kogi East must collaborate with other senatorial districts to establish a peaceful and equitable power-sharing arrangement before the 2027 general elections. The communiqué was endorsed by 26 prominent APC figures from the district.

We acknowledge, with courage, that the lack of proper internal political realignment in Kogi State following the historic 2015 election and the sudden, painful passing of our revered leader, Prince Abubakar Audu, is a matter that must finally be resolved after more than ten years.

Conference Chairman Maj. Gen. Patrick Akpa (retd) emphasized that Kogi East will no longer be treated as a subordinate political bloc. He stated that the political divisions following Audu's death in 2015 have persisted for over ten years, arguing that healing old divisions and rebuilding alliances are necessary to bring political power back to Kogi East.

We call for an immediate shift toward building consensus, renegotiating power transfer and rotation, and establishing an inclusive, development-driven agenda that guarantees equitable access to the instruments of power.

While pushing for the governorship, the stakeholders affirmed their full support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election and Governor Ahmed Ododo's bid for a second term. They identified victory for the APC in all 2027 elections as the party's immediate priority. The district claims it delivered the highest bloc vote for Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election and is prepared to increase that support.

The stakeholders also urged leaders across Kogi Central, Kogi West, and Kogi East to engage in dialogue and negotiate a fair power rotation framework. They seek an inclusive, development-focused agenda that ensures equitable access to power, asserting that Kogi East is a major political bloc prepared to claim its position.
