Fidalgo features in Betis victory over Real Madrid

Real Madrid had the better chances, but Real Betis found the one goal that mattered and held on for a landmark win. Troy Parrott turned in a loose ball to give the hosts a 1-0 victory, then Álvaro Valles denied Kylian Mbappé from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

Madrid controlled the opening minutes and pressed toward Valles’ goal. The Betis goalkeeper made a close-range save from Dean Huijsen in the 11th minute, before Vinícius Júnior hit the post from a tight angle with the goal open.

Betis grew into the match through possession. Isco moved deeper and linked with Antony, who created an opening for Cucho Hernández with an acrobatic control. The Colombian’s first-time effort narrowly missed the post.

Madrid came closest before halftime after a rapid counter involving Arda Güler, Jude Bellingham and Vinícius. Vinícius squared for Mbappé, whose first shot was stopped by Natan on the goal line. Mbappé’s follow-up struck Marc Bartra’s chest and was cleared.

The second half became more even as Madrid’s midfield tired in Seville’s intense summer heat. Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini’s substitutions gave the hosts fresh impetus, while Parrott’s hold-up play helped them move out of their defensive third. The Irish striker, Betis’ most expensive signing of the summer, reacted first to Thierno Deossa’s header and Courtois’ short clearance to score in his third appearance.

Madrid almost salvaged a point in added time. Carlos Espí’s spectacular equalizer was ruled out for an earlier offside, and Mbappé then placed a penalty weakly to Valles’ right after Natan fouled Vinícius. Valles saved it, completing an unforgettable performance. Fidalgo came on for the final 30 minutes.
