FIFA denies Infantino offered Morocco 2030 World Cup final for support

FIFA has vehemently denied reports suggesting that its president, Gianni Infantino, offered Morocco the hosting rights for the 2030 World Cup final in exchange for political support. The global football governing body declared the claims "false and misleading" in a statement to EFE on Wednesday.

The allegations originated from a report by The Times, which claimed Infantino made the offer to Morocco as part of an effort to secure endorsements and bolster his standing within FIFA. The report suggested this move was linked to his recent unsuccessful attempts to sell stakes in the World Cup to private entities and followed a meeting in Morocco.

According to The Times, Infantino's alleged intention was to propose the 2030 World Cup final, jointly organized by Spain, Morocco, and Portugal with three matches in South America, to the North African nation. Morocco has been a key ally of Infantino since he took office ten years ago. The report indicated Morocco's desire to host the final at the Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca, while Spain has aspirations for the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid to be the venue.

The controversy emerges amid growing pressure on Infantino, with several football associations, including England, Wales, and Serbia, reportedly withdrawing their support. Former footballer Luís Figo has also publicly called for Infantino's resignation, criticizing his leadership. The Times reported that Infantino is "desperate" to gain support to remain in his position for another four-year term starting in 2027. FIFA, however, maintains that any decision regarding the 2030 World Cup final venue will be made "at the appropriate time."
