FIFA has yet to decide NFF’s future and plans Nigeria visit

FIFA and the Confederation of African Football have not decided what happens next for the Nigeria Football Federation after its president, general secretary and several executive committee members resigned.

In a letter to NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, FIFA said it was assessing the legal, governance, administrative and electoral implications of the developments. The review follows the resignation of Ibrahim Gusau and other officials on Aug. 27, amid mounting scrutiny over the performances of Nigeria’s national and youth teams.

FIFA and CAF are currently assessing the legal, governance, administrative and electoral implications arising from the current circumstances within the NFF.

The departures came days before the NFF election scheduled for Sept. 27. The National Sports Commission had stepped in after President Bola Tinubu called for action to address what he described as “repeated failures,” including the failure of Nigeria’s senior men’s and women’s teams to qualify for their respective World Cups.

At this stage, FIFA and CAF have not reached any conclusions regarding the matters under review and no determination has been made with respect to any potential next steps.

A Nigerian delegation led by NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko met FIFA President Gianni Infantino and other officials at FIFA House in Zurich on Sept. 1. FIFA said it had since received communications from several stakeholders, but had reached no determination.

FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov said the review required a careful examination of the facts, the NFF’s regulatory framework and the positions communicated by the parties involved. FIFA and CAF said they were still assessing the situation and had made no decision on any potential next steps. The international bodies are expected to visit Nigeria as part of their assessment.
