FIFA names 2026 World Cup Best XI, featuring Messi and Mbappe

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has unveiled its official 2026 World Cup Team of the Tournament, recognizing the standout performers from the competition hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Spain, the world champions, and tournament runners-up France lead the selections with three players each, forming a formidable 4-3-3 formation.

A surprising choice for the goalkeeper position was Vozinha of Cape Verde, who was selected over Spain's Unai Simon. Despite Simon leading La Roja to victory and earning the Golden Glove award for best goalkeeper, the 40-year-old Vozinha impressed with his performances, including a clean sheet against Spain in the opening match and a total of 18 saves throughout the tournament.

The defensive line features Spanish full-backs Pedro Porro and Marc Cucurella, alongside France's Dayot Upamecano and Argentina's Lisandro Martínez. Porro and Cucurella were instrumental in Spain's defense, which conceded only one goal. The selection has sparked debate, with notable omissions including Spain's Aymeric Laporte and Pau Cubarsi, the latter named Best Young Player.

In midfield, FIFA recognized Rodri, Jude Bellingham, and Michael Olise. Rodri, who received the Golden Ball for his pivotal role in Spain's championship win, is joined by Bellingham, who scored seven goals, and Olise, who provided seven assists, nearing a long-standing French record.

The attacking trio is headlined by Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and Erling Haaland. Mbappe secured the Golden Boot with 10 goals and four assists, also becoming the all-time leading World Cup scorer with 22 goals. The 39-year-old Messi guided Argentina to their third final in four editions, while Haaland's presence completes a potent forward line.
