Fifpro demands player protection against intimidation and abuse

The global footballers' union Fifpro is demanding that measures be adopted to protect players participating in the World Cup from intimidation and abuse. These behaviors, primarily racist and discriminatory, have been experienced both in person and on social media in recent weeks.

The players carry the expectations of a nation, but this should never be at the expense of their safety, dignity or well-being, nor should abuse be minimised as part of the game.

Fifpro stated in a release that these acts of "intimidation and hostility" off the field are not isolated incidents but part of a "systemic pattern that can no longer be accepted in football or society." The union stressed that while players carry the expectations of a nation, this should never compromise their safety, dignity, or well-being. Abuse should not be dismissed as part of the game, as the national team represents an extension of the players' workplace and they must be protected accordingly.

It calls for a "collective commitment" from security forces, social media platforms, media outlets, fans, and the general public.
