Fiji considers biometric checks at its borders

Fiji could introduce biometric technology at its borders as authorities strengthen digital screening and coordination among security agencies.

Bernardo Daveta, the permanent secretary for policing and communications, outlined the work during a submission to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence. The committee was considering the Fiji-Australia Vuvale Union and Ocean of Peace Alliance treaties.

Australia is working with Fiji’s Immigration Department to improve screening and digitize entry and control procedures at international airports. Fiji is also upgrading digital border systems at ports, while police, customs, immigration and other agencies work more closely.

Daveta said Fiji’s efforts against serious transnational organized crime include establishing a Joint Enforcement Centre, which Cabinet has approved. The center will bring together intelligence from police, the military, customs, other law-enforcement agencies and the community. It is being set up under a committee chaired by the police commissioner.

Committee member Penioni Ravunawa asked whether Fiji would deploy biometric scanning, a border-monitoring database or visa-tracking software directly integrated with Australia’s border-control system. He also asked about the implications for Fiji’s data sovereignty and its people. Daveta said an integrated approach would improve information sharing and strengthen Fiji’s response to security threats and transnational crime.
