Fiji National Archives Reaffirms Commitment to Preserving Nation's Heritage

The National Archives of Fiji has renewed its pledge to safeguard the nation's documentary heritage, underscoring the vital role archives play in preserving historical records, ensuring accountability, and protecting the rights of future generations. Celebrations for International Archives Day highlighted the significance of these institutions.

It’s the International Archives Day where we celebrate not only the records that we have but the work that archivist conservators in these institutions do, recognising the work that they do.

Government Archivist and Director Timoci Balenaivalu stated that archives are more than mere collections of old documents. He emphasized their essential function in maintaining Fiji's history and identity. "It’s the International Archives Day where we celebrate not only the records that we have but the work that archivist conservators in these institutions do, recognising the work that they do," Balenaivalu said.

Balenaivalu also recognized the crucial support from partner organizations and stakeholders. "And archives cannot stand alone; their strength lies in collaborative record keeping, culture and heritage preservation," he added. Permanent Secretary for Archives Eseta Nadakuitavuki commended the archivists and record keepers for their role in upholding transparency and preserving the nation's collective memory.
