Fiji targets 113 more communities for telecommunications expansion

Fiji is extending its reach to connect 113 more communities through the Universal Service Scheme, a government initiative to close the digital divide. Minister for Communications Ioane Naivalurua announced the next phase of the plan, which builds on over 54 sites already commissioned nationwide. The Telecommunications Authority of Fiji has also proposed plans for approximately 300 additional sites, with rollout expected to commence in 2027.

These investments are designed to enhance crucial services in areas where telecommunications are not commercially profitable. Naivalurua highlighted that the initiative goes beyond mere connectivity, offering children better learning opportunities, businesses avenues for growth, and improved access to healthcare and government services for remote populations. He described this as "beyond connectivity."

The program underscores Fiji's commitment to its digital transformation, ensuring that rural, remote, and maritime communities are not left behind. The focus is on equitable access, fostering development and inclusion across the archipelago.
