Final ruling: Dentist who drugged and sexually assaulted patient receives three-year suspended sentence

A Romanian appeals court has issued a final ruling in the case of a dentist accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a patient, influencer Ștefania Costache, known online as Lolrelai. The court reduced the initial 10-year prison sentence to three years, suspended.

The court also maintained the dentist's obligation to pay 50,000 euros in moral damages to the victim. The appeals court's decision is final. The lawyer representing the victim stated that this is reportedly the first case in Romania where a doctor has been convicted for using prohibited substances on a patient with the intent of committing sexual offenses.

The case stems from allegations made by Costache, a former contestant on the show "iUmor." She detailed in an online vlog that after a dental visit, the dentist allegedly administered substances that impaired her consciousness. She claims he then took her to his apartment and sexually assaulted her. Costache filed a criminal complaint for events that occurred in 2020. Throughout the trial, the dentist denied the accusations.

The Court of Appeal sentences the dentist to 3 years in prison, at a distance of 5 years from the commission of the acts. Although on the merits he received 10 years in prison, the Court of Appeal reduces it to the minimum, and the doctor will benefit from the suspension of the execution of the sentence. Moral damages remain 50,000 euros.
