Finnish Media Slams Police for Dangerous Moped Chase Maneuver

Finnish newspapers have strongly criticized a police maneuver that ended a chase by ramming a 15-year-old moped rider into a ditch and a steel fence in Tuusula. The incident, captured on video, has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the proportionality of police force used against a minor.

Savon Sanomat commented that the moped rider was participating in a "moped meet," which police stated involved criminal activity. However, the newspaper argued that based on the videos, the police's use of force appeared excessive. The chase itself, at high speed, could have led to severe injury or even death for the young rider. The paper emphasized that society needs to address this "overreaction" to ensure trust in future police actions.

Karjalainen echoed these concerns, stating that the intensity of the police action, based on video evidence, did not seem necessary. "It is difficult to understand why ramming a minor moped rider into a ditch in such a violent and dangerous manner was necessary," the paper wrote. It also pointed out that a high-speed chase could create more danger if other moped riders or the public were present.

Aamulehti reminded readers that such moped gatherings have previously resulted in fatal accidents, acknowledging the police's role in monitoring them. However, it stressed that the Tuusula incident's "action-movie-style" stop was not a justifiable method, even for a modified, unregistered moped ridden without a license. Ilta-Sanomat labeled the incident a "PR disaster" for the police, stating that the authorities have damaged their reputation, especially in the eyes of young people. A thorough investigation into the matter was deemed essential.
