Fire at Fundeni Institute: 37 Patients Evacuated; Mattress Suspected Cause

Firefighters from ISU București-Ilfov swiftly responded to a smoke incident at the Fundeni Clinical Institute in Bucharest on Saturday morning. The fire originated in a salon on the third floor, prompting the evacuation of 37 patients from the affected area. Upon arrival, crews found the fire contained within the salon, but smoke had spread significantly throughout the section.

Fifteen water and foam extinguishing units, a high-altitude intervention vehicle, a vehicle for extrication, the Special Salvage Detachment, and six SMURD (Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication) teams were mobilized. Raed Arafat, head of the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU), stated that while the fire was confined to one salon, smoke permeated the entire ward. He noted that the rapid intervention by firefighters prevented any patient injuries, even minor ones.

The fire most likely started from a mattress, but the details will be clearly established by the firefighters.

The fire has since been extinguished, and the situation is under control. Firefighters will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the precise circumstances that led to the blaze. Arafat indicated that a mattress was the most probable cause, but official confirmation awaits the investigation's conclusion. The red plan for intervention was activated, and emergency medical services were on standby but not required.
