Fire departments: Bulk order for fire trucks to save millions

Bavarian municipalities are joining forces to significantly cut costs on essential firefighting equipment. A total of 171 local authorities have participated in a collective bulk order for fire engines, a move spearheaded by the CSU parliamentary group.

The initiative, coordinated by the Bavarian State Fire Brigade Association, focuses on the LF 10 model fire truck. Thorsten Schwab, a CSU state parliament member from Lower Franconia, initiated the action. He highlighted that this bulk purchasing strategy could reduce the cost per vehicle from over 600,000 euros to less than 500,000 euros.

Beyond the per-vehicle savings, the collective order also slashes expenses related to tendering processes and bureaucratic requirements. Schwab estimates that these combined savings will amount to over 25 million euros for the participating municipalities. He emphasized that the program is voluntary, allowing those needing individual solutions to procure them separately. Similar bulk-buying efforts have been noted in other German states like Hesse and Baden-Württemberg.
