North Rhine-Westphalia lifts Sunday truck ban due to low water levels

North Rhine-Westphalia is temporarily suspending the ban on Sunday and holiday truck driving to mitigate the effects of low water levels on the Rhine River. The state's Ministry of Transport announced that the exemption applies to transport and empty runs directly or indirectly linked to managing the consequences of the low water.

"The restrictions pose significant challenges for many companies," stated Transport Minister Oliver Krischer (Greens). "With this exception, we ensure that supply chains can be maintained and supply bottlenecks avoided." Additionally, trucks will be permitted to drive on Saturdays during the summer holidays. This regulation is initially limited to August 31 and does not apply to oversized or heavy transports.

Due to persistent low water, many cargo ships can only operate at a fraction of their usual capacity. The relaxation of the driving ban is intended to temporarily shift more freight transport from waterways to roads. This follows a high-level meeting where the new Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) announced immediate measures to maintain supply chains on vital waterways like the Rhine, Danube, and Elbe. North Rhine-Westphalia had advocated for a unified federal solution.
