Fire Destroys Six Houses and Shops at Kano Market

A fire destroyed six houses, shops and storage facilities at Kofar Wanbai Market in Kano State, according to the state fire service.

The blaze began around 9:43 p.m. Friday in the Babban Layi section of the Yan Robobi area. Firefighters responded from the service headquarters and stations at Rijiyar Zaki, Sabon Gari, Government House and Bompai after receiving a distress call.

The affected two-storey building measured about 120 by 125 feet and housed plastic shops and storage facilities. The fire service said two ground-floor shops, two first-floor shops, six stores and four temporary upper-floor stores were affected. The fire started upstairs before spreading to lower levels, but crews contained it before it reached other parts of the market.

The service attributed the fire to a solar system. Its director, Sani Anas, urged traders and residents to install fire detectors, keep working extinguishers and follow fire-safety rules.
