Fire in Kallithea: Dramatic moments as son collapses fearing parents dead; rescuer says 'I saved your mother'

Dramatic scenes unfolded in Kallithea, Greece, on Sunday afternoon as a large fire engulfed a two-story building at the intersection of Aristeidou and Agion Panton streets. The blaze left four people injured, caused severe property damage, and created scenes that shocked onlookers and residents.

The most harrowing moment occurred when an elderly woman became trapped on the balcony of the burning apartment, desperately calling for help amid thick smoke. Her rescue came from a passing motorcyclist who risked his life. "I saw smoke and the grandmother was shouting 'Help, help.' I dropped my motorbike and told her 'Jump, jump,' and I caught her with another child," said the visibly shaken rescuer, emphasizing his only wish was for the grandmother's well-being.

Shortly after the fire started, the son of the elderly couple living in the building arrived. Seeing the flames and fearing for his parents' lives, he broke down in tears while holding the family's small dog. Neighbors and passersby comforted him, informing him that his parents had already been taken to the hospital.

Four individuals were hospitalized due to the fire. The elderly couple suffered from smoke inhalation, while two firefighters were injured during the suppression efforts. One firefighter sustained facial burns, and the other experienced severe respiratory problems requiring oxygen. Strong firefighting forces responded to the scene, controlling the fire before it could spread to adjacent properties. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
