Fire in Mount Gede National Park extinguished, officials remain vigilant

Firefighters have successfully extinguished a blaze that erupted in the Surya Kencana West Meadow area of Mount Gede Pangrango National Park in Bogor, West Java. The fire, which began on Thursday, August 6, 2026, was contained before it could spread further into the forest.

According to Sadtata Noor Adirahmanta, head of the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park Center, the affected area spanned approximately one hectare. The flames primarily consumed dry grass and a small amount of woody vegetation near the edelweiss savanna, moving towards the forest.

Thanks to the alertness of officers, MMP, and volunteers in the field, the fire was completely extinguished.

Adirahmanta credited the swift response of park officials, community forest management partners (MMP), and volunteers for their efforts in fully extinguishing the fire. Despite the success, teams on the ground are conducting regular monitoring and sweeps for the next three days to ensure no embers remain that could reignite the blaze.

This precautionary measure is part of the Ministry of Forestry's strategy to prevent the fire from resurfacing and spreading within the national park. Mount Gede Pangrango is recognized for its significant biodiversity and is a popular hiking destination. Officials emphasize the ongoing vigilance to maintain the safety and integrity of this vital conservation area.
