Fire kills 14 newborns at major Pakistan hospital

Tragedy struck Pakistan's capital early Wednesday as a devastating fire claimed the lives of at least 14 newborn babies in the maternity ward of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad.

The fire broke out around 6:45 am local time on the third floor of the Mother and Child Health Ward. Rescue officials believe an air-conditioning compressor exploded inside the nursery, igniting the blaze. While at least one baby was reported rescued, the overwhelming majority of the newborns in the ward perished.

Islamabad's Chief Commissioner, Sohail Ashraf, confirmed that emergency teams and police responded swiftly to control the fire. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. His office conveyed condolences to the grieving families, stating that the loss of children in such circumstances is "irreparable."

Police have indicated that the newborns suffered severe burns, necessitating DNA testing to confirm their identities before their remains can be released to their families. Fires in large buildings are a recurring issue in Pakistan, often attributed to lax enforcement of safety regulations and building codes.
