"Fire Mountain, Under the Stars": Jayro Bustamante presents his new production in Guatemala City

Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante is bringing his latest cinematic creation, "Cordillera de Fuego" (Fire Mountain), to Guatemala City for an open-air premiere at the Miguel Ángel Asturias Cultural Center. This highly anticipated production marks Bustamante's fifth film, further cementing his international reputation built on acclaimed works like "Ixcanul" and "La Llorona."

The film delves into the dramatic intersection of nature and human society, centering on the emergence of a new volcano within the Fire Mountain range. It masterfully weaves together elements of drama, action, and magical realism, reflecting the complex realities of natural phenomena in Guatemala. The narrative explores contrasting viewpoints: for some communities, the volcanic activity represents an existential threat, while for others, it presents an unexpected business opportunity.

"Cordillera de Fuego" features a cast comprised of both Guatemalan and indigenous talent, including the notable return of actress María Mercedes Coroy. She portrays a vulcanologist confronting corruption while striving to protect at-risk communities. The ensemble also includes Juan Pablo Olyslager, María Telón, Willian Toc, Tatiana Polomo, and Jonathan Shitamúl, among others.

Inspired by the tragic 2018 eruption of the Fuego volcano, which caused widespread devastation and loss of life, the film incorporates historical context to its narrative. The premiere event on July 2nd promises a comprehensive cinematic experience, including a red carpet, a gastronomic fair, the film screening, and a post-projection meet-and-greet with Bustamante and the cast, offering attendees a unique opportunity to engage with the film's creators.
